    The trips made by Professor Thomas Stewart Traill, were usually in the late summer while on holiday with his family in Britain but also in France, Germany, and Switzerland. Many of the diaries are illustrated with sketches of architecture and scenery. The diaries show Traill to have been a sensitive tourist giving detailed accounts of scenery, geology, history, local customs and industry.
