Scope and Contents

The contents are as follows. (i) Paper discussing the difference between the ancient and modern treatment of morals, logic, natural philosophy and metaphysics; the value of philosophy; effects of money, etc., undated. (Folio 1.) It is headed 'To be inserted in the third Book of Vol.4 of Origin of L.’, but it bears no relation to the published edition. One of the 'papers apart' (folio 52) is similar to the discussion of wealth in ‘Antient Metaphysics’ v, page 70. (ii) 'Comparison of ancient arts and learning with modern. Of the pernicious effects of wealth and of trade', undated (Folio 64.) Wrapper only. Monboddo number 224. (iii) 'Of the love of money and the bad effects it produces', followed by chapters on the need for education and exercise, 1784. (Folio 66.) Monboddo number 277. (iv) 'Of the course of learning necessary to make a man a philosopher', 1795. (Folio 100.) Numbered 304. (v) 'Of the restoration of letters after the taking of Constantinople', 1787. (Folio 106.) Page 45 and wrapper only. Monboddo number 274.
