Scope and Contents

The contents are as follows: (i) Anonymous poems, chiefly on public affairs and personages of the early eighteenth century. (Folio 1.) Those placed first are numbered E.56-84 (with gaps; for the earlier part of this series see MS.20773 (i)). This is XVIII A in the ‘Inventory’ (MS.20770). At the end is added 'The Song of the Ridsquare fought on the 7 of July 1576 [sic]', formerly loosely enclosed in MS.20779. (ii) 'Character of Sultan Galga Cham of Tartary', a satire, [circa 1720], on George I. (Folio 41.) (iii) 'Some questions that masons use to put to thos who pretend to hav the word befor they will acknowledg them', 18th century. (Folio 43.) (iv) Two fragmentary papers, 18th century, on roadworks near Inchbelly Bridge on the River Kelvin, and on drainage works perhaps at Cumbernauld House. (Folio 45.) (v) Outline genealogy of William, Earl of Wigtown (succeeded 1668); notes on the descent of Mary, Countess of Wigtown, née Keith, with a heraldic painter's account; and notes of charters concerning the office of Constable of Scotland, with a list of monasteries in Scotland, late 17th century to early 18th century. (Folio 47.) (vi) 'Index of papers relating to ye Librarys', [circa 1709], belonging to and apparently compiled by James Kirkwood, promoter of parochial libraries. (Folio 52.) This is IV E 8 in the ‘Inventory’ (MS.20770). (vii) Recipes, 18th century. (Folio 59.) (viii) Key to a royalist cipher, mid 17th century. (Folio 63.) Printed in ‘Miscellany of the Maitland Club’, volume ii (Edinburgh, 1840), pages 491-493, (ix) Descriptions of some early charters in the Wigtown charter-chest, 19th century (some of the paper is watermarked 1862 and 1886-1887). (Folio 65.)
