Hector MacIver was born in the Isle of Lewis and educated in Stornoway and at Edinburgh University. Except for a period of service in the Navy (1940-1945), he spent his life teaching, mostly in the Royal High School in Edinburgh. He wrote and broadcast in both English and Gaelic.

Hector Maciver's literary output consisted largely of articles, stories and plays, but he also took part in broadcasts and wrote for radio. Much of his work concerned life in the Scottish Highlands and islands, but it also reflected his experience in the Navy and his love of literature.
