Scope and Contents

The contents are as follows. (i) Copies of depositions from victims of dacoits, 1808-1809, taken before William Coates Blaquiere, Acting Magistrate of Nadia (folio 1); (ii) Letter of Thomas Henry Ernst, Third Judge of the Provincial Court of Appeal at Benares (Varanasi), 1810, with an enclosed memorandum concerning police administration in the Benares district (folio 12). See also MS.11597. (iii) Papers, 1810, concerning the enquiry into the conduct of William Brodie, Bengal Civil Service, who was dismissed for receiving presents and neglect of duty, including a copy of Brodie's memorial to the Court of Directors (folio 39); (iv) Letter of Archibald Galloway to the Honourable John Edmund Elliot, 1810, with a paper by Galloway titled ‘On the Cultivation of Muhummadan Law by the Servants of the British Government in India, especially by those of the Judicial Department' (folio 145); (v) Copy of decree of the Supreme Court concerning the will of Charles Weston, 1812 (folio 54); (vi) Draft minutes of the Judicial Department concerning the annulment of Samuel Salter's appointment as Assistant Judge in Bundelkhand, 1813 (folio 156); (vii) Copy of a legal opinion of Robert Percy Smith, Advocate-General of Bengal, 1810 (folio 165).
