The Indian service of John Elliot in Madras (1805-1807) and Bengal (1807-1830) is described fully, as are his later political activities as Member of Parliament for Roxburghshire (1837-1841 and 1847-1859), his work as Secretary of the India Board of Control (1847-1852), and his financial and personal affairs.
