Scope and Contents

Volume containing the alphabetical rearrangment of Sir James Balfour’s ‘Practicks’, with an 18th century index (folios 8-207; iii-xvii). It is prefaced by ‘The ordoure of Chancellarie’ section (folio 1). It is followed by ‘Schiplawis elected further of alcheron… Anno 1543, 1557’ (folio 209) and ‘The lawes of the merches betwixt Scotland and Ingland, 1590’ (folio 232); these are not the Balfour passages on these subjects, which appear in their proper places in the main section. The border laws are followed by ‘The order to be observit in the Steward court of Annadaill, etc.,’ with directions for keeping the castles of Annan, Hoddam, Lochmaben, etc., (folio 244). The volume concludes with a copy, in the hand of Patrick Crawford, of the Covenant of 1638 (folio 247 verso). The main part of the volume was written by James (or Patrick) Murray (folios 243 verso, 247). The volume or the exemplar from which it was copied may be dated 1590 x 1596: the laws of marches section does not include the 1596 treaty.

The description of the manuscript in the folio catalogue (F.R.185) includes the reference: (W.4.24).
