Scope and Contents

Notes, 1991, of Ian Rankin relating to the development of the plot and characters for ‘Strip Jack’. Folios 1-64.

The notes include research and working notes, including research on forensic science, pathology, and Edinburgh. Some of the notes include references to specific drafts, including first, second, and third drafts. Otherwise, the distinction between the notes and drafts is often unclear. Some notes have been revisited and subsequently annotated by Rankin as his development of the novel progressed. Many of the notes are undated and, as such, evidence of development and changes in theme and plot have been used to inform the arrangement.

Editorial notes, 1991, of Ian Rankin relating to revised drafts of ‘Strip Jack. Folios 65-71.
