Scope and Contents

Notes of Ian Rankin, circa 1994, relating to the development of the plot and characters for ‘Blood Hunt’. Folios 1-63.

The notes include plot and character development, a synopsis, and background research on the SAS, the Falklands, and philosophy. Most of the notes are undated. Some of the notes include references to specific drafts, including first and second drafts. Otherwise, the distinction between the notes and drafts is often unclear. Some notes have been revisited and subsequently annotated by Rankin as his development of the novel progressed. As far as possible, evidence of development and changes in theme and plot have been used to inform the arrangement.

The notes relate to plot and character revisions, and additional plot development, for revised drafts. Most of the notes are undated and, as such, the arrangement has been suggested by a comparison of changes in plot and theme.
