Scope and Contents

The booklet contains versions of three hymns of Buchanan, who is not identified as the poet, and a few other items. On the relationship between the versions of Buchanan's hymns with manuscripts of the same texts found in McLagan MS Gen 1042/20 and 1042/4, Glasgow University Library, see Donald Meek, 'Dugald Buchanan (1716-68): the poet, the translator, and the manuscript evidence. [Bochanan, Dùghall]. Song headed "Bruadar mu Shonnas", beginning 'Air bhi dhamhs' an mo Shuain / Re Bruadar diomhain mar tha Cach'. 30 stanzas of 4 lines. First published as "Am Bruadar" in 'Laoidhe spioradail le Dùghall Bochannan (Edinburgh 1767), pp. [37]-41. Folios 1r-3v.

[Bochanan, Dùghall]. Song headed "An Cruthadair & na Creaturibh", beginning 'Creud e Dia, na creud e ainm? / Cha tuig na Haingle 's airde Gloir!' 16 stanzas of 4 lines. First published as "Mordhachd Dhé" in 'Laoidhe spioradail', pp. [1]-3. Folios 4r-5r.

[Bochanan, Dùghall]. Song headed "A fior Ghaisgeach", beginning 'Cha bu Ghaisgeach Alastair Mor / No Casar thug an Roimh gu geil'. 15 stanzas of 4 lines. First published as "An gaisgeach" in 'Laoidhe spioradail', pp. [42]-45. Folios 5v-6v.

[Anonymous]. Song, unheaded, beginning 'Cha duair mi 'n rair Cadal / Air Leaba 's mi 'm onar.' 10 stanzas of 8 lines, the last one missing the first 4 lines. Folios 7r-8v.

[Anonymous]. Song headed "Oran Gaoil", beginning 'Ge fad ta mi 'm Shuain / Gur buan damh dusgadh'. 5 stanzas of 16 lines. Folios 8v-10v.

Blank leaf, signed on the verso "Donald McNicol". Folio 11.

[Anonymous]. Song, unheaded, beginning 'Shi bhidag sho chiur mi / Thainig orm om Thaoibh Culibh, / Ach a Righ mhoir mo dhuails rain i'. 18 stanzas of 3 lines, or seven-stress strophes, with the last line of each to be repeated.

[Anonymous]. Song headed "Praelium Gilicrankian[um] cantilena". A song in Latin on the battle of Killicrankie, beginning 'Grahamius notabilis coegerat Montanos / Qui clypeis & gladiis fugerunt Anglicanos'. 14 stanzas of 4 lines. Folios 13v-14v.

Physical Description

A small unbound paper booklet of 11 folios, 15.5. x 9.7 cm. Signed on folio 11 verso: 'Donald McNicol'. With a further three conjoined leaves, now numbered folios 12-14. These were described as an 'inset' by Mackechnie (Acc.2152/2), but their contents are independent of the other leaves.
