Scope and Contents

A small booklet of 16 folios, 15.4 x 9.6 x 0.2 cm. Dated at the top of folio 1r: 1755. In the hand of Rev. Donald MacNicol. Formerly Acc.2152/20.

It contains five Ossianic or Fenian lays, all of which are found in J. F. Campbell's 'Leabhar na Feinne', London 1872. Campbell had access to MacNicol's collection and incorporated it in his book, where it is collection 'D'; some of Campbell's notes on the collection are found in MS.14859. See also 'Leabhar na Feinne', pp. [v] and xv-xvi.

The booklet contains the following:

"Osshain agus an Clerich", beginning 'A Chlerich a chanfas na Sailm'. 47 stanzas of 4 lines. See also MS.14857, folios 16-17. 'Leabhar na Feinne', pp. 72-74. Folios 1r-5v.

"Conn Mac an Deirg", beginning 'Sgeala air Conn Mac an Deirg'. 47 stanzas of 4 lines. 'Leabhar na Feinne', pp. 115-117. Folios 6r-10v.

"Cath na'n Seiseir", beginning 'Seishear ga'm biodhmaid ma'n Riogh'. 14 stanzas of 4 or 6 lines, beginning on folio 11r. An additional stanza, to be inserted between stanzas 10 and 11, is written on folio 10v. Stanza 7 is wanting 2 lines, for which a space is left. 'Leabhar na Feinne', p. 93. Folios 10v-12r.

"A Chios Chnamh", beginning 'Sin iad hugaibh hun an Oil'. 16 stanzas of 4 lines. 'Leabhar na Feinne', p. 166-167. Folios 12v-14r.

"Cath Bein Edin", beginning 'Teantach mor na Feine'. 28 stanzas of 4 lines. 'Leabhar na Feinne', pp. 96-97. Folios 14v-16v.
