Ossianic verse and poetry of Duncan Riach MacNicol and Lachlann Mac Theàrlaich Òig., 1762-1766

Scope and Contents

A small booklet of 10 folios, measuring 15.2 x 9.3. x 0.2 cm. It is dated 1766 on the first page, and 1762-3 at the head of folio 4r. In the hand of Rev. Donald MacNicol, and signed on folio 10v: Donald McNicol. Containing Ossianic verse, which is printed in 'Leabhar na Feinne', and more contemporary poetry. Formerly Acc.2152/23. The contents are as follows:

"An Invinn", beginning 'Ossain uasail mhic Finn'. 24 numbered stanzas of 4 lines, and an additional stanza at the foot of folio 2r, to be inserted between stanzas 9 and 10. 'Leabhar na Feinne', pp. 135-136. Folios 1r-3v.

"Urnidh Ossain", beginning 'Aillis Sgeil, a Phadric'. 36 stanzas of 4 lines. Dated '1762-3' at head of folio 4r. 'Leabhar na Feinne', pp. 41-42. Folios 4r-7v.

MacNicol, Duncan Riach. Four lines of verse, unheaded, probably addressed to Donald MacNicol, beginning 'Hoir an Eichdrigh' Mhaistir Donil'. A note underneath states: 'The above stanzas were compos'd by Duncan Riach McNicol in Glenurchy commonly calld modern Ossain.' Referring to the preceding work, which was probably sent to MacNicol by Duncan Riach. 'Leabhar na Feinne', p. 42. Folio 8r.

[Mackinnon, Lachlann Mac Theàrlaich Òig]. Unheaded fragment of his song "Latha siubhal Slèibhe dhomh", beginning 'La a Shiuthil Slethigh dho', comprising versions of lines 9-16, 21-24 and 57-60 of the song as edited in Ronald Black's 'An Lasair' (Edinburgh 2001), pp. 28-36. The fragment is entirely crossed out in the manuscript. Folio 8r-v.

Blank leaves containing only Donald MacNicol's signature and mathematical scribbles on the verso of folio 10. Folios 9-10.
