Scope and Contents

A miscellaneous folder containing the following:

Campbell of Islay, John Francis. Two lists, in Campbell's hand, of the contents of MacNicol's collection. Campbell described MacNicol's collection and published his Ossianic ballads in his 'Leabhar na Feinne' as text 'D'. The lists are:

List headed "Amongst MacNicols Collection of poetry are the following Ossianic ballads". With a note on folio 2 recto dated Feb. 16, 1871. Formerly Acc.2152/69. Folios 1-2.

List headed "Mac Nicols Manuscripts. Lent me by his grandson Ludovick Cameron February 1871." Formerly Acc.2152/70. Folio 3.

Acrostic poem in Gaelic on the name of the poet Donnchadh Bàn Macintyre. The author is not identified. Written in pencil, ca. late 19th or early 20th century. Beginning 'Dean le dichioll t-uile shaothair'. Headed "An acrostic on Duncan Ban Mac Intyre the poet, written for the University Celtic Society of Edinburgh, to be inscribed in [...]". Formerly Acc.2152/71. Folio 4.

Notes, undated, by John Francis Campbell of Islay on the Rev. Donald MacNicol. Formerly Acc.2152/73. Folio 5.

Letter, 1874, of Alexander Nicolson, Skye, to Ludovick Cameron, grandson of Rev. Donald MacNicol; addressed to Cameron at the Oriental Bank, Threadneedle Street, London. Concerning the whereabouts of MacNicol's collection, which Cameron had lent to Campbell in 1871 and which was subsequently placed by Nicolson in the Advocates Library for safekeeping. A note by Cameron on the back of the letter, dated 23 June 1874, states: "Called on Mr MacPherson, who has the iron box containing the MSS. He has supplied Mr. Campbell/Islay with copies of such as he wanted. I leave them in his care for the present as the safest place. L.C." Formerly Acc.2152/74. Folios 6-7.
