Scope and Contents

The collection consists chiefly of correspondence and papers relating to politics, especially colonial matters, and to estate and family affairs. Both Edward Ellice and his son were influential Liberal Members of Parliament who owned substantial estates in Scotland, Canada, America and the West Indies.

Scope and Contents The contents are as follows: (i) ‘Map of part of the county of Inverness, particularly the estates of Glengarry ...’, lithographed Edinburgh, 1840. Scale 1" = 2¾ miles. Some of the estates are shown in different colours: a blue wash has been added by hand to most of the lochs. The estate of Glenquoich which is recorded as 'The Property of Macdonell of Glengarry for sale' is inscribed 'bought by E. Ellice' in a contemporary hand. Single sheet, 65 x 52.4 centimetres. Scope and Contents The contents of this manuscript had become separated from the Ellice Papers (MSS.15001-15195, Ch.12601-12763) and were purchased separately.The manuscript consists of; (i) Letters 1845-?1857, undated, of Edward Ellice to his niece Marion, subsequently Coleman, chiefly concerning British and European political affairs. (Folio 1.) For the rest of his letters to her see MS.15072. (ii) Letters, [circa 1832-?1862], undated, of Ellice to Joseph Parkes concerning political affairs....

Scope and Contents

The thesis deals with Alexander Ellice and the fortune he amassed as a West India merchant and the careers in business and politics of his son Edward Ellice of Invergarry (died 1863).

Photographs of the leaves of the Glenquoich visitors' book containing the names of friends and relatives who visited the Ellices' estates at Invergarry during the late summer and autumn of each year from 1846 to 1863.

Scope and Contents The book appears to have belonged to Katherine Jane Ellice, first wife of Edward Ellice of Invergarry (died 1880), who died in April 1864. Each visitor was asked to sign the book, adding the dates of arrival and departure, his profession, his object in coming and any remarks or complaints. Several took the opportunity to write in verses or poems or to make drawings, which range in size from thumbnail sketches to full-page drawings. Latterly, small photographs of many of the visitors...
