Three papers, apparently read to unidentified learned societies.

 File
Identifier: MS.8889

Scope and Contents

The papers are as follows:

(i) 'Observations on the ancient and modern analysis' (incomplete), January, 1768 (folio 1), with an unsigned report on the paper (folio 25).

(ii) A copy 'read 7th Septʳ, and 5th Octʳ, 1784' of the 'History of the parishes of Monivaird and Strowan copied from the Mss of the late Mr [James] Porteous' of Dalvich, minister of Monzievaird and Strowan (folio 29), followed by fragments in a different hand (folio 81). For a more legible and apparently more accurate copy, see Adv.MS.31.1.2. The original appears to have been almost illegible (see Adv.MS.31.1.2, folio 1), for this copy contains numerous small gaps (mostly of single words and short phrases) most of which the copyist was unable to fill. The copy from which this was made was probably in some disarray (see folio 34, 43, 45 verso-46, 52 verso); this text is quite differently arranged from that of Adv.MS.31.1.2, in comparison with which the correct order would appear to be folio 30-34, 46-52 verso, 34 verso-42 verso, 44-46, 43-43 verso, 34-34 verso, 52 verso-77 verso, 80-80 verso, 79-79 verso. Extracts from this paper were published in 'Archaeologia Scotica', volume ii, page 6.

(iii) 'An account of the Caves of Kennery, Ambola and Elephanta, in the East Indies; in a letter from a Gentleman in Bombay to his friend in England, 1783', January and May, 1786 (folio 84). For another copy of this account, see MS.3966. It is different from that published in William Hunter, ‘A Concise Account of the Kingdom of Pegu...’, pages 118-152.
