  • Immediate Source of Acquisition

Presented, 1950, by the Special Trustees of Newbattle Abbey and Park under the will of the 11th Marquess of Lothian, with the consent of the 12th Marquess, the Testamentary Trustees of the 11th Marquess, and the Governors of Newbattle Abbey College.

  • Arrangement

The manuscripts were nearly all received bound. They have been arranged in chronological order within subject groups, except where manuscripts of different periods had been bound together.

Many of the manuscripts contain a large number of blank leaves, which have not been foliated.

  • Scope and Contents

The collection consists of manuscripts on a wide variety of subjects, many copied from manuscript or printed works, and chiefly dating from the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. Among them are some account-books, diaries, and other manuscripts of family interest (including a few concerning the 2nd Earl of Buckinghamshire, father of the 6th Marchioness of Lothian), but very few letters.

  • Separated Materials

The greater part of the family correspondence is with the family archives, deposited in the Scottish Record Office.
