Scope and Contents
The larger groups of letters concern Henry Dundas, 1st Viscount Melville; Hugh Elliot, the diplomatist; Robert Graham, a writer in Glasgow; Daniel Clark, merchant, Campbeltown; and John Campbell, Writer to the Signet. The other correspondents include Grahame of Claverhouse; James Stewart, Lord Advocate; Admirals St. Vincent and Cornwallis; Allan Ramsay, the painter; William Robertson, Deputy Keeper of Records; and Dr William Buchan, physician and author. There is also a letter supposedly written by Simon Fraser, 11th Lord Lovat, a few days before his execution in 1747.

This manuscript has been formed from various accessions:
folio 59, bought, 24 July 1956, from Sotheby's, lot 499;
folio 28, bought 16 October 1956, from Sotheby’s, lot 1960;
folio 15, bought, 24 July 1959, from Sotheby’s, lot 306;
folio 228, bought, 8 December 1959, from Sotheby’s, lot 374;
the rest bought elsewhere at various dates, 1949-1960.
The letters were bought by the National Library of Scotland with the aid of the Reid Fund.
