The papers, not then in their present arrangement, were used for their biographies of Viscount Haldane by Sir Frederick Maurice: ‘The life of Viscount Haldane of Cloan' (London, 1937), and Dudley Sommer: ‘Haldane of Cloan: his life and times’ (London, 1960), and more recently by Stephen E Koss: ‘Lord Haldane: scapegoat for liberalism’ (New York, 1969). They were also drawn upon by Haldane himself for his posthumously published autobiography: ‘Richard Burdon Haldane, an autobiography’ (London, 1929).
