A table of contents, notes of obliterated lines, and a copy of the ballad `Thomas o` Winesberry`, all in the hand of John Leyden (folios 26-30 verso).

Seventeen proper psalm tunes, ten common tunes, church part only (all in the Psalter of 1615), and fourteen common tunes in four parts, as in the Psalter of 1615 but with some variations in the harmony, and with the addition of `Newtoune` and `Elgin` (folios 32-42 verso).

Custodial History

A note in John Leyden`s hand on the provenance of the manuscript is on folio ii. The manuscript would also appear to have belonged to `Jas. Jamisone` and `Marie Campbell`, whose names appear on folios 31 verso and 32 respectively. The name `Williane Stirling` is recorded on folio 31.

Presented, 1925, by the Faculty of Advocates to the nation on the foundation of the National Library of Scotland.

The words of the songs have been published completely, with a commentary, in Nelly Diem, ‘Beiträge zur Geschichte der Schottischen Musik im XVII Jahrhundert’ (Zürich and Leipzig, 1919), pages 67-116; and a selection in Edward Doughtie, ‘Lyrics from English Airs, 1596-1622’, (Harvard University Press, 1970). Many of the songs also appear in the Forbes ‘Cantus’, and in ‘Musica Britannica’ XV, and those of English origin are discussed by E H Fellowes in ‘The Modern Language Review’, XLI, 1946, pages 202-206.
