Criminal proceedings: a transcript, circa 1809, made by direction of Thomas Thomson, then Deputy Clerk Register, of two volumes, November 1493 to August 1504 and January 1507 to July 1513, forming part of the original records of the High Court of Justiciary.

Custodial History

The transcripts were presented to the Advocates` Library in 1880 by the Clerk of Justiciary.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

Deposited, 1925, by the Faculty of Advocates.

Existence and Location of Originals

The volumes from which the transcripts were made were formerly in the Advocates` Library (Adv.MSS.21.5.1-21.5.2), having been bought at the sale of Sir Robert Sibbald`s library in 1723. In 1880, by resolution of the Faculty of Advocates (5 March 1880), the volumes were delivered to the Clerk of Justiciary. They are now in HM General Register House.

Bibliography

Many of the cases in the volumes are printed in ‘Ancient Criminal Trials in Scotland’, volume 1, edited by Robert Pitcairn (Bannatyne Club, 1833).
