The contents are as follows:

(i) brief for the 9th Earl (later 1st Marquess) of Abercorn (folio 1);

(ii) brief for the 7th Earl of Galloway, 6th Earl of Stair, 13th Lord Somerville and 7th Lord Napier of Merchiston against a petition of the 4th Earl of Selkirk and the 3rd Earl of Hopetoun (folio 18);

(iii) brief for the same four peers as (ii) above relating to a point in a petition by the 7th Marquess of Tweeddale (folio 36);

(iv) observations, 1785, on the descent and right to the title of Earl of Moray of Francis Stewart, Earl of Moray (succeeded 1767) (folio 41), with additional observations (folio 78);

(v)-(vii) briefs, 1790, for the 7th Lord Napier of Merchiston (folio 88); 8th Lord Lindores (folio 100), with an additional brief (folio 120) and 7th Lord Belhaven (folio 128);

(viii) paper, 1788, in the claim of Andrew John Drummond to be Viscount Strathallan (folio 139).

The papers are in a number of hands. Two are subscribed `Mr Tait` (folios 17 verso, 99 verso), possibly John Tait who was admitted Writer to the Signet in 1781, and it is possible that the same man was responsible for, or at least concerned with, all these papers.
