Descriptions of the shires of Scotland by Sir Robert Sibbald, interleaved with the Scottish section (colls. 877-960) of Edmund Gibson`s edition of William Camden`s ‘Britannia’ in English.

 File
Identifier: Adv.MS.15.1.5

Scope and Contents

Sibbald intended that his work (which is not his revised edition of and supplement to Camden`s `Description of Scotland’) should both give a fuller account than the descriptions written for his `Atlas Scoticus` (Adv.MS.15.1.1), and clarify Camden`s text. He included material on topography, flora and fauna, industry, agriculture and outstanding buildings. The description of Shetland (which is not that published by Sibbald in 1711) was based on accounts sent to him by ministers there (folio 22).
