Manuscript, written in Italy, of the epitome by Junianus Justinus of 'Historiae Philippicae' by Trogus Pompeius, and of the prologues to that work.

Scope and Contents

The epitome begins on folio 1, and the prologues on folio 163.

The text is apparently contaminated from the [?] and [?] classes.

Headings in red. A large initial on folio 1 in blue, red, and gold and a border of flowers and leaves in red, brown, green and blue; in the centre of this at the root is a coat of arms, azure three thistles on a chevron or. Initials of each book and prologue alternately red and blue (except that those of books xx and xxi are both blue and those of xxii and xxiii both red); those of books i-v and viii nave tracing internally and in the margin, in ink with the red initals, in red with the blue. The text is written in a round, flowing humanistic hand.

Collation: 1-15¹⁰, 16¹², 17¹⁰. Modern signatures in arabic numerals in pencil in the lower inner margin of the first recto of each gathering, probably dating from the present binding. No catchwords. Pricking with a triangular awl in the outer margins, from first recto to last verso of each gathering. Ruling in ink. 1 column. 29 lines. Ruled area 150 x 92-95 millimetres. Secundo folio: `cum zoroastre bactrianorum`.

Physical Characteristics and Technical Requirements

Vellum (outside sheet of each garthering) and paper (remaining sheets; watermark a flower, Briquet 6502, North Italy, last quarter of 15th century). Scottish binding of brown crushed morocco tooled in gilt, circa 1825.

Custodial History

There are no other early marks of ownership. The manuscript belonged to Sir Robert Sibbald and was sold with his Library. Former pressmark: A.7.5. The manuscript was bought by the Advocates’ Library in 1723.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

Presented, 1925, by the Faculty of Advocates to the nation on the foundation of the National Library of Scotland.
