Scope and Contents

There were originally two volumes containing prayers to be said throughout the liturgical year, but the second volume is missing. This manuscript contains prayers from the Sunday before Advent until Easter. Incipit `Hier hebet sich an Ein Andechtig Buchlein mit etzlichenn gutenn Ubungenn durch das iar` (folio 1). Some prayers to be said at New Year, which should follow folio 114, were omitted and copied later by the scribe (folios 309-322).

Arrangement

Collation: 1⁸ (-1), 2-11⁸, 12⁶, 13-23⁴, 24-47⁸, 48⁸ (-8). Folios 308, 323 recto are blank. Written in black ink with rubrics in red. Catchwords on gatherings 1-12. Signatures on gatherings 1-24 (others have been cut off). 12-19 lines.

Physical Characteristics and Technical Requirements

Paper: watermark Briquet 1911 (but in some instances the lion is reversed); gatherings 11-15 resemble Briquet 189. Contemporary binding of stamped pigskin over wooden boards with panels of the Trinity and the Last Supper. The panels are signed AM and may be the work of Adam or Abraham Müller, binders in Wittenberg (‘Rollen- und Plattenstempel des XVI. Jahrhunderts’, page 276, numbers VII and VIII).

Custodial History

The manuscript belonged to the abbey of Petersberg at Erfurt and has an inscription `Liber S. Petri Erphordiae` (folio 1). Inside the front cover are the bookplates of an unidentified bishop, 19th century, and of John M Gray, Curator of the Scottish National Portrait Gallery, and a cutting from a 19th-century sale catalogue in which the manuscript was lot 376. It was lot 719 in the sale of Gray`s library at Dowell`s in Edinburgh, 7-9 November 1894.

Presented, 1925, by the Faculty of Advocates to the nation on the foundation of the National Library of Scotland.
