'Culross psalter', made for Richard Marshall, Cistercian abbot of Culross.

 Item
Identifier: Adv.MS.18.8.11

Scope and Contents

The contents are as follows:

(i) Calendar in red and black (folio 1). Entries in red include Saints Thomas Aquinas (7 March), Servanus (1 July), and Ninian (16 September), and in black, Saints Margaret of Scotland (19 June), Findoce (13 October) and the usual Cistercian saints. The calendar was published in ‘Kalendars of Scottish saints’, pages 53-64.

(ii) Psalter and Canticles (folio 7). The Te Deum is omitted.

(iii) Litany, including Saints Servanus, Blaan, Kentigern and Findoca (folio 185 verso).

(iv) Office of the Dead and prayers (folio 189).

Written in littera textualis, probably at Culross Abbey. An inscription in gold (folio 6 verso) reads `Me fieri fecit ricardus marchel quondam abbas de culenros quem deus salvet hic et in evum.` Marshall was appointed abbot before 1448 and deposed circa 1469. Parts of folios 177-196 are in a different hand. There is a historiated initial of David playing the harp, with a border of flowers, gold ivy leaves, and birds (folio 7); other decorated initials with borders occur at the ferial divisions (folios 26 verso, 42, 56 verso, 71 verso, 90 verso, 109 and 129), and decorated initials alone at psalms 51 (folio 56) and 118 (folio 136) and with a partial border at the beginning of the Canticles (folio 169). Smaller initials and line-fillers throughout are in red or blue (occasionally gold) with red or mauve penwork.
