Scope and Contents

The contents of the manuscript are as follows:

(i) ‘La Complainte de Nature a L`Alchymiste’ by Jean Perréal, followed (folio 18) by ‘La Response de l’Alchymiste’. Printed in ‘La Roman de la Rose’, iv, pages 123-202. It omits the prologue and a number of lines throughout, and the last 187 lines of the ‘Response’ are replaced by the last forty lines of the ‘Complainte’. (ii) `Ensuict par ordre le nombre des Roys Crestiens et leurs cois dames portans chacun sa clause.` Cf. Bibliothèque Nationale, MS. fr. 24315, folio 2. (Folio 29.)

(iii) ‘La mort de Charles VII’ by Georges Chastellain. See ‘L`Oeuvre de Georges Chastellain’, vi, page 437. This copy omits the final verses `L`acteur à France`, and is preceded by fifteen lines beginning `Contentez vous vous tous nobles de france`. In Bibliothèque Laurenziana MS. 120, these replace the last fifteen lines. (Folio 32 verso.)

(iv) `Le Credo nouvellement compose`. Cf. Bibliothèque Nationale, MS. fr. 24315, folio 47 verso. (Folio 42.)

(v) `Humme mortel Cree de terre et faict` by Georges Chastellain. See ‘L`Oeuvre de Georges Chastellain’, viii, page 302. This copy has two additional verses. (Folio 46.)

(vi) Quatrain beginning `Mort est Jhesus tout meurt et tout mourra`, and a rondeau beginning `De mort de jugement`. A similar rondeau has been printed from a breviary in Sotheby’s sale catalogue, 10 July 1972, lot 39. (Folio 47.)

(vii) Ballade beginning `Deul angoisseux, Raige desmesuree` by Christine de Pisan. See ‘Oeuvres poétiques de Christine de Pisan’, i, pages 7-8. (Folio 47.)

(viii) Latin quatrain on death, and poem beginning `Sans espargner pappe ne empereur`. (Folio 48.)

(ix) ‘L`Epitaphe Villon’ by François Villon. This shows a number of small variants from that in Auguste Longnon`s edition, page 96. (Folio 49.)

(x) Ballade beginning `Je congnoys que dieu ma forme`. Printed in ‘L`Esperit trouble. Le joyeulx devis récréatif’. (Folio 50.)

(xi) Ballade beg. `Je considere ma povre humanite`. (Folio 50 verso.)

(xii) `Ensuict ung beau petit traicte des quatre novissimes faict et compose par Venerable et Religieuse personne frere bigot selestin Natif de Rouen`. Cf. Bibliothèque Nationale, MS. fr. 24315, folio 71 verso. It is listed in ‘La Bibliothèque d’Antoine du Verdier’, page 127. (Folio 51.)

(xiii) Rhymes and riddles, including verses to the Virgin. (Folio 64.)

(xiv) `Des quatre complexions`. Cf. Bibliothèque Nationale, MS. fr. 24315, folio 111. (Folio 65 verso.)

Folios 1-17 are in a different hand from the rest.

Physical Characteristics and Technical Requirements

Paper (watermark ?Briquet 11428). Bound in green morocco, gilt-stamped with the arms and cipher of Claude d`Urfé.

Custodial History

The manuscript belonged to Claude d`Urfé, baron de Châteauneuf (1501-1558). La Vallière sale catalogue (1783), number 3271.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

Presented, 1925, by the Faculty of Advocates to the nation on the foundation of the National Library of Scotland.
