Book of hours, according to the use of Utrecht, made in the second half of the 15th century in the western Netherlands, probably in the province of South Holland.

Scope and Contents

The manuscript was made in the western Netherlands, probably in the province of South Holland.

The contents are as follows:

(i) Calendar in red and black (folio 1). Entries in red include Saints Ponciaen (14 January), Pancraes (12 May), Servaes (14 May), Odulf (13 June), Lebuin (25 June and 12 November), and Geroen (17 August).

(ii) Hours of the Blessed Virgin Mary (folio 13).

(iii) Hours of the Cross (folio 44).

(iv) Hours of the Holy Spirit (folio 50).

(v) Hours of Eternal Wisdom of Henricus Suso (folio 68). See ‘Bibliotheca Dominicana Neerlandica Manuscripta’, page 225.

(vi) Penitential Psalms and litany (folio 84). The beginning is missing. The litany includes St Geroen among the martyrs, and Saints Williboort, Servaes and Gielis among the confessors.

(vii) Suffrages (folio 95).

(viii) Office of the Dead (folio 99).

There are borders of flowers and foliage and large decorated initials on gold grounds at the beginning of sections (ii)-(v) and (viii). The different offices in the Hours and the beginning of the suffrages (folio 95) are marked by decorated bar borders and smaller initials. There are red and blue initials with decorative penwork throughout. Ruling is in purple ink.

Arrangement

Collation irregular in 23 gatherings of 2, 4, 6 or 8. A page is missing before folio 84 with a corresponding lacuna in the text; other single pages are missing between folios 108 and 109, and 122 and 123, but there are no textual lacunae. 21 lines.

Vellum. English 18th-century binding of brown calf, gilt-tooled.
