Scope and Contents

(i) Calendar in French in red, blue and gold (folio 1). Entries in gold include Saints Martial (3 July), Stephen (3 August), Romain (23 October) and Thomas (29 December). A number of feasts of the Rouen diocese appear in red or blue, including the translation of St Ouen (5 May), and Notre-Dame des Neiges (5 August) instituted in 1454.

(ii) Sequences of the Gospels (folio 7).

(iii) Prayers (folio 9), including ‘Obsecro te`, `O intemerata’ (in the masculine form) and `Ave cuius conceptio’ (‘Repertorium hymnologicum’, number 1744).

(iv) ‘Hore beate marie virginis secundum usum Rothomagensem’ (folio 14). Prime is replaced by Matins of the Hours of the Cross.

Folio 39 verso blank.

(v) Penitential Psalms (folio 40).

(vi) Litany, including Saints Martial, Ursin, Mello, Ouen, Taurin and Austreberta (folio 46).

(vii) Office of the Dead (folio 50).

(viii) `Oraison tresdevoto [sic] a dire tous les samedis a nostredame. Missus est gabriel’ (folio 65 verso).

(ix) Prayers and suffrages (folio 69).

There are eleven large miniatures in borders containing flowers, fruit, grotesque beasts and a peacock: the Annunciation (folio 14); the Visitation (folio 19 verso); the Nativity (folio 25); the annunciation to the shepherds (folio 28); the adoration of the kings (folio 30); the Purification (folio 32); the Flight into Egypt (folio 34); the coronation of the Virgin (folio 36); David in prayer (folio 40); Job and his friends (folio 50); and the Virgin and Child enthroned, with the figure of a woman in prayer (folio 65 verso). A leaf which probably contained a miniature is missing from the beginning of section (ii). Two-line initials on gold with flowers, and small initials and line-fillers in gold on red or blue throughout. Ruling in red ink.

Physical Characteristics and Technical Requirements

Vellum. 18th-century French binding of red morocco with gilt-tooled spine.

Custodial History

There is no indication of provenance. The note A 94 (substituted for 92 erased) appears on the front flyleaf and ‘35[?]` and `P.U.’ on the back flyleaf.

Presented, 1925, by the Faculty of Advocates to the nation on the foundation of the National Library of Scotland.
