Identifier: Adv.MS.20.8.3

Scope and Contents

The contents of the manuscript are as follows:

(i) `Speculum peccatoris` by an unknown author. It has been variously attributed to Saints Bernard and Augustine, Richard Rolle of Hampole, and others. See ‘Writings ascribed to Richard Rolle’, pages 353-354, and ‘Die Handschriftliche Überlieferung der Werke des heiligen Augustinus’, II/2, page 116. Printed in ‘Patrologia latina’ xi, columns 983-992. (Folio 2.)

(ii) Devotions to the Virgin, beginning 'O virgo concipiens et pariens emmanuel quid tibi mentis fuit'. The colophon reads 'Explicit gladius compassionis gloriose virginis et matris dei marie finitus apud blesenbeke 21 marcii anno 1439º secundum modum camerecensem. laus deo'. (Folio 16.)

(iii) `Oratio dominica anagogice exposita` by Cardinal Petrus de Alliaco. Printed in his ‘Tractatus et sermones’. See ‘Le Cardinal Pierre d`Ailly’, page 373, number 136. It is preceded by an indulgence of forty days, dated 6 July 1414. (Folio 31 verso.)

(iv) 'Devota meditatio super Ave maria' by Cardinal Petrus de Alliaco. Printed in his ‘Tractatus et sermones’. See ‘Le Cardinal Pierre d`Ailly’, page 373, number 137. Dated 13 June 1414, with an indulgence of forty days. (Folio 34.)

(v) Religous meditations, mostly from the 'Stimulus amoris', here attributed to St Bonaventura, but which is probably by the Franciscan, Santiago of Milan. It begins 'Nota devote et fideliter ex consequentibus quantum placeat deo'. The 'Stimulus amoris' is printed in ‘Bibliotheca Franciscana Ascetica Medii Aevi’, iv. (Folio 41.)

(vi) 'Stimulus compassionis', here attributed to St Bernard, but of unknown author¬ship (see 'Sur les poèmes latins attribués à saint Bernard', pages 402-403). It contains a number of verses which do not appear in the version printed in ‘Patrologia latina’ cxlix, columns 601-630. (Folio 43.)

(vii) 'Opusculum domini bonaventure de modo praeparandi ad celebrandum missam'. Although attributed to St Bonaventura and printed among his works (viii, pages 99-106), the authorship is in doubt; see ‘Notices et extraits de quelques manuscrits latins de la Bibliothéque Nationale’, ii, pages 347-348. (Folio 77 verso.)

(viii) Devotional extracts, two of which are headed `De dignitate sacerdotum` and `De sacerdotibus male viventibus`, from the works of Saints Augustine, Jerome, Bernard and others. The first piece, `Albertus episcopus de sacramento`, has been edited from Bodleian, MS.Lat.lit.e.17 in 'A text attributed to Ruusbroec circulating in England', in ‘Dr L. Reypens-Album’, pages 153-171. (Folio 90 verso.)

(ix) 'Centum articuli dominice passionis'. Prayers and meditations of Henricus Suso. See ‘Bibliotheca Dominicana Neerlandica Manuscripta’, pages 282-283. (Folio 100 verso).

(x) Treatise on purgatory and death, beginning 'In igne purgatorii sunt morientibus impuritas...De detentis enim in purgatorio certum est'. (Folio 129.)

(xi) Sermon addressed to a religious community on the definitions of a monk by St John Clymacus, beginning 'Johannes clymacus abbas montis syon cui alius abbas sic scripsit'. (Folio 160.)

Written in littera textualis cursiva and littera textualis, there are six hands: sections (i), (ii-iv), (v-viii), (ix), (x) and (xi). Sections (i-viii) have rubrics in red; section (ix) rubrics in red and ornamented initials in red and blue. There is a contents list on folio 1 verso and a Latin verse and two hexameters written in different hands on folios 99 verso and 170 verso. Folios 38-40, 99 recto, 100 recto and 165-170 recto are blank; some ruled.
