Commonplace book, probably English, used by two different owners, the first circa 1642, the second circa 1716.
Scope and Contents
The book is thematically arranged under a system of moral headings in Latin and Greek used by the first owner, possibly an Anglican clergyman or scholar, with an interest in Patristic and Jacobean divinity. The volume was the fifth in a series of at least six volumes of this nature belonging to him. The second owner has used the blank and incompletely filled folios of the volume for his entries (folios 2-84 verso), again on moral topics, mostly taken from printed sermons, especially those of John Tillotson, Archbishop of Canterbury.
