Bibliography

The work was published as ‘Memoirs of the Affairs of Scotland 1577-1603’, edited by James Dennistoun (Bannatyne and Maitland Clubs, 1830), but the text here differs considerably from that of the manuscript (then in the possession of Lord Belhaven, present location unknown) printed by Dennistoun, who gives the more significant variants on pages 145-166. The edition of Walter Ruddiman (Edinburgh, 1755), though apparently based on this manuscript, departs frequently from it.
The narrative beginning on folio 141 was printed at Edinburgh and London in 1600 and reprinted in ‘Criminal Trials in Scotland’ by Robert Pitcairn (Edinburgh, 1833), volume 2, page 208; the end (from ‘Criminal Trials in Scotland’, page 218 middle) is different in this copy (the 1755 edition is different again).
