Copies by John Wither, 1623, of English rolls of arms, mostly from `an auntient booke of Armes which Mr Glover Somerset the Harald had of Mr Joseph Holland in Cullers`.

Scope and Contents

All the arms are in trick. The contents are as follows:

(i) The shorter version of the Parliamentary Roll, circa 1312 (folio 2). ‘Catalogue of English mediaeval rolls of arms’, pages 42-45.

(ii) The first Dunstable Roll, 1308 (folio 61). ‘Catalogue of English mediaeval rolls of arms’, pages 39-40.

(iii) Arms from the Caerlaverock poem, circa 1300 (folio 73). ‘Catalogue of English mediaeval rolls of arms’, pages 29-34: this is type IV with 103 coats.

(iv) The shorter version of Holland`s Roll, circa 1310 (folio 78 verso). ‘Catalogue of English mediaeval rolls of arms’, pages 40-42.

(v) `These Armes followinge doth stande in the Cathedrall Church of westeminster and the bearers of them were Benefactors towardes the buildinge of parte of the said Church` (folio 81 verso). The forty coats set up in Westminster Abbey in 1220. For a list of them, see ‘Reges, reginae, nobiles et alij in Ecclesia ... Westmonasterij sepulti’, page 79. (vi) The Rouen Roll, circa 1410 (folio 84). ‘Catalogue of English mediaeval rolls of arms’, pages 78-79. 107 coats. The date given here is 1418.

(vii) The Gentry Roll, circa 1480 (folio 89). ‘Catalogue of English mediaeval rolls of arms’, page 111. 35 coats, headed `Tempore Edwardi quarti`.

(viii) An index to the volume, A-Mo (folio 91).
