Scope and Contents

A volume of psalm tunes and other songs, compiled circa 1643 by Edward Millar, director of the Chapel Royal of Scotland, and owned circa 1660 by Alexander MacAlman (Dean of Argyll?), from whom it passed to the Reverend Colin Campbell of Achnaba, minister of Ardchattan, an ancestor of the depositor.

The contents are as follows:

(ii) Fifteen common psalm tunes, all already contained in the psalter of 1635 in almost the same order, followed by fifty-three proper tunes, set out as for four parts, but having only the melody (tenor) written in, and signed and dated by Edward Millar, 13 April 1643 (folio 4 verso);

(iii) Five songs and catches in four parts in Millar's hand, of which two ('Absent I am' and 'Remember me my deare') have been published in ‘Musica Britannica’, volume xv, numbers 45 and 46, and appear also in MS.9450, numbers 31 and 36 (folios 62 verso);

(iv) Two songs in a different hand, one of which ('Ecce novum gaudium') appears twice and also in MS.9450 number 105 (folios 59, 72, 72 verso);

(v) Pieces in tablature, for cittern(?) (folio 73);

(vi) The text, without music, of three poems, of which 'Balou my bab' appears as number 69 in ‘Musica Britannica’, volume xv, and 'Thou sent to mee ane heart' as number 12 in H M Shire, ‘Sir Robert Aytoun’, a selection of poems edited and published in the ‘Ninth of May series’, volume ii (Cambridge, 1961) (folios 75-76).
