Scope and Contents

The contents are as follows.

(i) 'Libellus super elections facienda et eius processibus ordinandis' of Gulielmus de Mandagoto (later Cardinal-Bishop of Palestrina), with his gloss, printed in ‘Tractatus universi juris’ (Venice, 1584), volume xv, folios 408-435. See Johann F von Schulte, ‘Die Geschichte der Quellen und Literatur des Canonischeti Rechts’ (Stuttgart, 1875-1880), volume ii, pages 183-185. Following the explicit (folio 21 verso), the scribe has added 'Corpus scriptoris christus regat omnibus horis'. (Folio 1.)

(ii) Anonymous gloss on the Constitutions of Pope Gregory X, 1274-1275. Beginning 'Fideli. Hoc dicit quod spiritus sanctus procedit ex patre et filio.' (vi) The revision of Damasus’ ‘Brocitrda' by Bartholomaeus Brixiensis, printed in ‘Tractatus universi juris’ volume xviii, folios 506-512. Johann F von Schulte, ‘Die Geschichte der Quellen und Literatur des Canonischeti Rechts’, volume i, page 196. The last folio (folio 92) is damaged. (Folio 86.)

The manuscript is in several hands. Folio 22 is blank. Sections (iii)-(iv) have initials in red and blue with decorative penwork. In sections (i) and (vi) the rubrics are in red. Marginal notes and corrections occur in several hands.

There are some notes of legal cases on folios 84 verso-85, and the draft of a religious poem in French in seventeen four-line stanzas on folio 85 verso, beginning 'Ge ne sai que ge puiche faire'.

Section (i) is in two columns with marginal gloss, (ii)-(v) are in two columns, and (vi) is in three.

Sections (iii)-(iv) with quire-marks in red and brown. Traces of early foliation remain. (i)-(v) 2 columns, (vi) 3 columns (i) 35-36 lines (text), (ii) 43 lines. (iii)-(iv) 55-59 lines, (v) 71-84 lines, (vi) 75 lines.

Custodial History

There are inscriptions by previous owners on folios 22 verso and 37 verso, mentioning the names of 'Messer Cunrado di versingha' (1297), 'Messer lupoldo di ratispona' (1308), 'Messer ermanno de Monacho dalamagna' (1299), and 'domini Ch de frisinga'.

The volume contains a bookplate of Theodor, Freiherr von Cramer-Kiett (died 1884).

Bought at the sale of manuscripts of E von Scherling, Leyden.

The manuscript was bought by the National Library of Scotland with the aid of the Reid Fund.
