Book of hours, according to the Use of Rome, probably written in Padua.

 File
Identifier: MS.9742

Scope and Contents

The contents are as follows. (i) Hours of the Virgin. (Folio 1 verso.) (ii) Penitential Psalms and Litany. (Folio 97.) (iii) Mass of the Virgin from the Common of Saints. The text up to the Gospel has been deleted with red paint. (Folio 129.) (iv) Hours of the Cross. (Folio 133.) (v) Hours of the Holy Ghost. (Folio 138.) (vi) Office of the Dead. (Folio 145.)

Written in littera semi-gothica textualis. Folio 9 appears to have been written after folio 10. Folios 94 verso-96, 128, 143-144 are blank but ruled. There is a full-page miniature of the Annunciation, probably added in the first half of the sixteenth century (folio 2) and fourteen historiated initials depicting various saints, David in prayer (folio 97), Christ as the Image of Pity (folio 133), Pentecost (folio 138), Death richly robed and crowned, holding a mirror and a scroll which reads 'Hic est vita et mors in seccu' (folio 145), and a soul being rescued from Hell by angels (folio 152). All the pages containing these initials have full borders of flowers, fruit and foliage on plain grounds, or of jewels and Renaissance ornament on blue and red grounds. Several borders contain birds and animals, and one (folio 64 verso) depicts a peacock and a monkey in a landscape. Small initials throughout are in gold on blue or red grounds. On folio 1 verso an angel is shown holding a scroll on which the incipit is written in gold capitals, and from which hangs a coat of arms in a wreath. The arms appear to be barry of four sinople and or, and may be those of the Onara family of Padua. Some of the figures may be the work of the Paduan miniaturist Antonio Maria da Villafora. A brief note concerning the manuscript, signed by Tammaro de Marinis, 1948, is placed with it.
