    The general arrangement of the series is chronological, and the letters for each year are grouped under the name of their town of origin; where several merchants write from the same town, they are arranged alphabetically within that group.

    The papers have been used by John Telfer Dunbar for his ‘History of Highland dress’ (Edinburgh, 1962).
