Speeches and verses of various members of the Pantheon Society, an Edinburgh debating club; and papers concerning the activities of James Graham, quack doctor.

 File
Identifier: MS.9834

Scope and Contents

The contents are as follows. (i) Speeches and verses, 1780-1792, undated, of various members of the Pantheon Society. Unlike societies of literati such as the Select Society, the Pantheon opened its meetings to non-members, charging from sixpence upwards for admission, and drew large audiences - see J A Fairley, 'The Pantheon: an old Edinburgh debating society', in ‘Book of the Old Edinburgh Club’, volume i (1908), pages 47-75, and D D McElroy, ‘A century of Scottish clubs’ (privately printed, 1969) volume i, pages 150-165. Many of the speeches appear to be by James Penney, treasurer of the society, but other authors are also named. Nineteenth-century press cuttings on various subjects are pasted on the mountings of several folios. (Folio 1.) (ii) Papers, 1780-1784, concerning the activates of James Graham, including copies of advertisements for his 'Temple of Health' and 'Temple of Hymen' in London, for his lectures in Edinburgh, and the resulting controversy with the magistrates and the medical profession of the city which resulted in Graham's imprisonment for libel, 1783. (Folio 87.)
