'Iona Psalter'.
Scope and Contents
The contents are as follows.
(i) Calendar in black, red and blue. The KL initials, and the entries for the major festivals and for the feast of St Columba (9 June), probably intended to have been in gold, have not been completed. The feasts are fully graded with two entries for Saints Benedict, Augustine and Frideswide (12 February and 19 October). There are a number of English saints and also entries for the Scottish Saints Felan (8 January), Ciaran (4 March) and Finan (7 April). February-June have alphabets in red and blue in the margins. (Folio 1.)
(ii) Psalter in the Gailican version, lacking Psalms 51-52. (Folio 7.)
(iii) Canticles and Athanasian Creed. (Folio 128.)
(iv) Litany, including Saints Edmund, Alban, Columba, Baithin, Adamnan, Odran and 'Fredesiunda'. The collects following are in the female form and break off in the fourth prayer. (Folio 136 verso.)
(v) Prayer beginning 'Aperi domine os meum', followed by the Psalter of the Virgin - Ulysse Chevalier, ‘Repertorium hymnologicum’ (Louvain, 1892), volume i, number 2037. The text - for which see G M Dreves and C Blume, ‘Anatecta hymnica medii aevi’ (Leipzig, 1886-1922), volume xxxv, pages 189-199 - alternates with verses from the psalms and some short prayers. (Folio 140.)
Written in littera textualis by several scribes. There are decorated capitals and line-fillers in red and blue throughout, some marginal penwork, and larger initials in gold on red and blue grounds. Folios 144 verso-145 have line-fillers in green and red. The ferial divisions of the Psalter and the beginning of Psalms 101 (folio 88) and 109 (folio 100 verso) are marked by elaborate initials of interlaced foliage and small animals, infilled with gold on pink, blue or chequered grounds. The initial to Psalm 97 depicts David harping (folio 85 verso) and that to Psalm 1 includes musicians in rounders (folio 7).
There are some sketches in the margins and corrections to the text, including an omitted stanza written on a slip of vellum and sewn on to folio 149. The name 'Beotar' (?) appears on folio 9.
The manuscript was probably written in the Oxford area between 1180 and 1220 for a nun in a Scottish Augustinian house, possibly for Beatrix, first prioress of Iona.
