The prayer book is written in brown ink in littera textualis with bastarda elements. Ruled in red ink. Of the large miniatures, two have full floral borders and depict the Annunciation (folio 11 verso) and a cleric (probably Robert Blackadder) in prayer before the crucified Christ (folio 47 verso). The others show the Agony in the Garden (folio 31), the celebration of Mass (folio 45 verso) and the Pietà (folio 84 verso). There are numerous small miniatures and historiated initials, including Saints Ninian and Margaret of Scotland. Small gold initials and line fillers on red, blue or brown grounds throughout. Some spaces for initials have been left blank, and section (xxi) has no decoration.

There are inscriptions and prayers in several hands of the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries on folio 1, one of which refers to St Kentigerna as patroness of Inchcailloch in Lennox.

Custodial History

The manuscript was probably written for Robert Blackadder (died 1508), who became archbishop of Glasgow in 1483. The prayer on folio 41 contains the phrase 'Libera me domine Robertum famulum tuum'. Ex-libris of Alexander Stewart. archbishop of St Andrews (died 1513) (folio 1). The name of Alexander, 5th Lord Livingston, is stamped on the binding. A note inside the front cover suggests that the book was in Richard Bateman's sale at Christie's in 1774. Bookplate, probably of the Agas family of Wymondham, Norfolk, 19th century.

The prayer book was bought by the National Library of Scotland with the aid of the Friends of the National Libraries.
