Letters and papers relating to the estate of Durris, Kincardineshire.

 File
Identifier: MS.137

Scope and Contents

The chief correspondents are Charles Mordaunt, 4th Earl of Peterborough [‘Peterborrow’], the owner of the estate through the marriage of the 3rd Earl to a daughter of Sir Alexander Fraser; Samuel Mitchelson, Writer to the Signet, his agent in Edinburgh; and Charles Forbes of Shiels and Charles Irvine of Cults, successively factors on the estate. The letters of the Earl contain nothing but claims for remittances; the papers are the accounts of the estate. The letters throw light on the hardships of the tenants during the Forty-Five (see note, folio i). There are interesting items in the account of William Fraser, Writer to the Signet, Edinburgh, who was employed by the creditors on the estate to get their claims adjusted.
