Miscellaneous documents concerning heraldry, many by officials of the English College of Arms; including designs for a union flag, ca. 1604.

 File
Identifier: MS.2517

Scope and Contents

The documents are almost all concerned with the general subject of knighthood and a very large number of them have to do either with the Order of the Bath or with the Baronetage; they include lists of knights made on various ceremonial occasions. They include also the following items of particular Scottish interest:

Six designs in colour for uniting the crosses of St George and St Andrew in one flag, with a note of preference by the Earl of Nottingham, circa 1604 (folio 67 verso);

'These Knightes were made in Scotlande by the Earle of Hartforde the Kinges Leiutenannt generall, the ii of Maye, beinge Sundaye after the Destruction of Edenbrough & other townes, Anno 1544' (folio 135A);

A list of knights made by James VI and I on his journey to London, 1603 (folio 149);

Bannerets and knights made in Scotland by the Earl of Surrey, perhaps in 1503 (folio 347 verso);

'Knights made in the Campe beside Rokesborough in Scotland the 27 of September by the handes of the high & mightie prynce Edward Duke of Sommersett Lord protector', 1547 (folio 358);

There is a 'Syllabus Contentorum' (folio iii) in the same Anstis hand as the 'Syllabus' of MS.2514, and a more recent alphabetical index (folio 1).
