Each poem has the date and place of composition as a heading; most were written in Edinburgh, but Montrose, London and York are also mentioned. The text breaks off in October 1713.

Custodial History
A letter inserted at the beginning of the volume states that the manuscript was bought by Alexander Gardyne at the sale of Principal John Lee's library in 1861.
The manuscript was bought by the National Library of Scotland with the aid of the Reid Fund.
