Letters and papers of Captain the Honourable (afterwards Admiral Sir) Alexander Forrester Inglis Cochrane.

 File
Identifier: MS.3022

Scope and Contents

The contents are as follows.

(i) Egypt, 1801 (folio 2). The papers include Alexander Cochrane's orders for the landing of the British Troops, 24 January (folio 2), but are mainly taken up with complaints of Cochrane to Lord Keith or regarding his conduct, relative to the lack of supplies for the sick (the action taken by Cochrane and other officers in this matter was regarded as a breach of discipline), to the omission of his name from the Parliamentary vote of thanks to the forces engaged in the Egyptian campaign, to the rate of exchange charged to members of the Royal Navy, to a court-martial regarding a collision of two vessels, and to the inferior nature of a medal to be conferred on him by the Sultan of Turkey. For letters of which the originals do not appear in their place, see the copies made by Cochrane, folios 92-95.

(ii) Ferrol, 1804 (folio 97). A complaint to his senior officers regarding peculation committed by a purser on that station.

(iii) 'Statement of the public services of Admiral the Honorable Sir Alexander Inglis Cochrane, G.C.B. &c.' (folio 108).

The papers are preceded by a letter, 1848, of the 10th Earl of Dundonald, transmitting the papers to Baillie Cochrane, afterwards 1st Baron Lamington.
