Walter Blaikie collection: letters containing Jacobite discourse.

 File
Identifier: MS.3128

Scope and Contents

The contents are as follows.

'Free and Impartial Reflexions of a Member of the House of Commons of England on occasion of the Speech of King George to the two Houses of the same Parliament on the 28th of October, 1745, containing a justification of the rights of the Royal House of Stuards to the Crown of Great Brittain, against the pretensions of the House of Brunswick Hannover. In a series of Letters. Letter I. At Edinburgh, 1745' (folio 1), dated London, 3 November 1745 (folio 21).

'A Continuation of Free and Impartial Reflexions, or, the Political Problem as to what part the Dutch and the other sovereigns of Europe, Allies of King George, ought to take with regard to sending an assistance of troops which that Prince demands of them in the present circumstances ... Letter II. At Carlisle, 1746' (folio 23), dated 'Excester', 13 November 1745 (folio 30), together with 'The Answer to the preceding letter, containing the Solution of the political problem' (folio 30 verso). These last two letters are a digression; the first seems to be addressed, possibly by a different writer, to the author of the ‘Reflexions’, who answers in the second.

The author returns to his previous subject in ‘A Second Continuation of Free and Impartial Reflexions, or, the Pleading in favour of the House of Brunswick Hannover, anent its pretesions upon the Crown of Great Brittain. Letter IV. At Lancaster, 1746’ (folio 43), dated London, 28 November 1745 (folio 58).

‘A Third Continuation… or, a Reply to the Pleading made in favour of the House of Brunswick Hanover, anent its pretensions to the Crown of Great Brittain, by the Defender of the Royal House of Stewards. Letter V. At Manchester, 1746’ (folio 60), dated London, 22 December 1745 (folio 85 verso).

‘A Fourth Continuation … or, the Pleading of Mr. Advocate General of the great Committee of the British Nation, anent the respective rights of the Pretenders to the Crown of Great Brittain, with the Conclusions. Letter VI. At Darby, 1746 (folio 88), undated.

On folio i is a note in a more modern hand: 'An excellent & faithful translation of all the French letters on this subject by Bp. Alexander', with another suggesting that this may be Alexander Smith, Bishop of Mosinopolis. On folio 24 is a reference to the author's 'deputation'.
