Scope and Contents

According to a note on folio 2, the book was purchased by the Incorporation of Coopers of South Leith in 1669, and it contains records of transactions from the Acts and Statutes, 1525 to 1754. These records, which are not continuous, are chiefly of the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries. They include: a note of entry-fees to be paid by freemen and their sons, with the Oath of Admission (folio 22 verso); minutes of the admission of freemen from 1601 to 1754, with their marks (folio 23; for a modern copy, see folio 88); lists of apprentices from 1605 to 1734 (folio 47), of free servants and journeymen from 1605 to 1736 (folio 60), of assaymasters from 1681 to 1688 (folio 80), of the present freemen in 1674 and 1677 (folios 81 verso, 82), and of servants and journeymen engaged for periods of weeks, 1674 (folio 87 verso); records of payments from the Little Box from 1685 to 1713 (folios 1, 77) and to widows from 1680 to 1722 (folio 78); and notes of bonds and payments of rents from 1699 to 1719 (folio 83). Miscellaneous minutes covering the period 1659-1720 occur throughout the volume (folios 7, 10, 58, 76 verso, 85 verso).
