Medical case-book containing the notes of a physician resident in the neighbourhood of Dalkeith.

 Item
Identifier: MS.3774

Scope and Contents

The notes give a detailed chronological account of the day-to-day treatment and condition of the physician's patients. Numerous diseases are specified, including a severe outbreak of smallpox in the winter of 1733-1734.

While these notes occupy the major part of the volume (pages 80-249), pages i-iv and 1-79 contain others by the physician, taken from, or relating to, works in which he was interested. These works are partly medical, but also include those of Isaac Newton, Samuel Clarke, the Metaphysician, Anthony Collins, the Deist, and the 3rd Earl of Shaftesbury. Pages 250-261 and 270-274 contain notes on 'Central Heat', 'Animal Heat', and 'Aquae Medicatae'.
