Manuscripts of the Reverend George Low, the naturalist.
Scope and Contents
The contents are as follows.
(i) Lists of plants, animals, and fossils from W Hudson's ‘Flora anglica’, Sibbald's ‘Scotland illustrated’, and Martin Martin's ‘Description of the Western Islands’, pages 61-82. This should perhaps come after folio 45. (Folios 1-11.)
(ii) 'Some observations on natural history, founded on experience; together with descriptions of curious animals, plants, fossils, microscopic views, &c., &c. The whole illustrated with drawings ... Collected, observed, and the drawings made by George Low', Stromness, 1770. The original order appears to have been: folios 13-31, 42-43, 46-47, 44-45, ?1-11, 48-49, 50-52. The proper position of folio 41 is uncertain. The notes relate largely to Orkney. The date 1771 occurs on folio 42, and on folio 45 Low refers to 1771 as 'last year'.
(iii) Drawings by Low of plants in Linnaeus' ‘Flora Lapponica’. (Folios 32-40.)
