Oscar Baillie entered the industry at the age of 20 when he took up the job of manager at the New Savoy in Glasgow in 1929. He was promoted to manager of the Middlesborough Hippodrome where he met and married his wife. After their marriage Mr & Mrs Baillie returned to Scotland, where he managed the La Scala Dundee.

He won a special award from 20th Century Fox Films in 1947 for his publicity efforts behind The House on 92nd Street. He was the first Dundee manager to receive the award. Baillie was Chairman of the Scottish section of the Cinematograph Exhibitors Association, Vice-Chairman of the Society of Managers Amalgamated and Supervisor of the West of Scotland Cinema Circuit.

BY April 1951 he was running Harry Linekar’s circuit of 11 cinemas and managing for Green’s two of the largest cinemas in the country, Green’s Playhouse Glasgow which held 4460 people, and the Dundee Playhouse which had over 4000 seats.
