The papers were bought by the National Library of Scotland with the aid of the Reid Fund.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

The letters of Joseph Neuberg to Thomas Carlyle presented, 1930, by Alexander Carlyle, Edinburgh, nephew of Thomas Carlyle, with MSS.555-556, in continuation of his previous gifts of Carlyle manuscript. Carlyle’s letters to Neuberg and the other documents bought, Sotheby’s Sale, 20 March 1930, lot 854.

Some of the letters are printed in ‘Carlyle and Neuberg’, in "Macmillan’s Magazine", volume i (1884), page 280; they were used by David Alec Wilson in his series of works on Thomas Carlyle.
