Arrangement

All volumes have been made up of papers received unbound. The papers in each volume or section of a volume are arranged by date, except in volumes entitled 'Individuals', where they are arranged alphabetically by the names of the persons concerned, and a list of contents has been placed at the beginning of each volume.

The papers are arranged as follows:

MSS.1041-1052. General papers. MSS.1053-1059. Papers concerning Scotland. MSS.1060-1074. Papers concerning India and the East. MS.1075. Miscellaneous. MSS.1076-1079. Lists and copies.

Custodial History

The papers were bought by the National Library of Scotland with the aid of the Reid Fund.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

Mainly purchased in 1931. Eighteen papers were presented by Professor A F Pollard, and others were purchased at later dates, 1932-1936, as indicated under the relevant descriptions.

Separated Materials

The papers are additional to MSS.1-67, 351-354, 640-642 and 653.
