  • Arrangement

All volumes have been made up of papers received unbound. The papers in each volume or section of a volume are arranged by date, except in volumes entitled 'Individuals', where they are arranged alphabetically by the names of the persons concerned, and a list of contents has been placed at the beginning of each volume.

The papers are arranged as follows:

MSS.1041-1052. General papers. MSS.1053-1059. Papers concerning Scotland. MSS.1060-1074. Papers concerning India and the East. MS.1075. Miscellaneous. MSS.1076-1079. Lists and copies.

  • Scope and Contents

Volumes entitled 'Individuals' contain correspondence regarding patronage and other matters of personal interest (requests for employment, promotion, and pensions, complaints of unjust treatment, etc.). These papers frequently give information of a more general kind.

  • Separated Materials

The papers are additional to MSS.1-67, 351-354, 640-642 and 653.

For contemporary lists in which many of these papers are entered, see MSS.1076-1078.
